Following the recent discovery that the US Jersey cow Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude is less than 100% Jersey in purity, the Board of Directors of Jersey Canada has discussed the situation as it relates to the Jersey breed in Canada. Following a meeting of the Board at the time of the 2010 Jersey Canada Annual Meeting, the following decisions have been reached to address the purity status of Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude and descendants: 1. Following the results of the genomic tests performed on Oomsdale Goldo Goldie Gratitude (JEUSAF111224922), her purity percentage in the Jersey Canada herdbook will be reduced to 75% purity. 2. The three sons of Gratitude that are currently registered in Canada will have their purity status amended to 87.5% purity as a one-time exemption. These three sons are:
- Oomsdale Jace Grat Grieves –ET (JEUSAM607010222)
3. Male progeny of Grieves, Garden, and Gannon will be deregistered from the Canadian Jersey herdbook. This applies to eight bulls currently registered. Progeny of these sires would only be eligible to be 0% recorded by Jersey Canada. Also, males from other members of the Gratitude maternal line are also 4. Female progeny of Grieves, Garden and Gannon bred before June 1st, 2010 will be eligible to registered at an appropriate level of purity according to the purity of the dam. Progeny of these three sires from a 100% Jersey cow would be assessed a purity level of 93.7% purity. Subsequently, progeny of a 93.7%purity female and a 100%Jersey siremay be registered as 100%pure. Progeny to be registeredwith a breeding date after June 1st, 2010 will be recorded at 0%. These decisions were made on the basis of currently available science in order to maintain the high standards that Canadian Jerseys are regardedwith both in Canada and internationally. These decisions also do not require a change in the bylaws of Jersey Canada and re>lect the wishes of the Board - that registered males in the Canadian Jersey population remain exclusively 100% Jersey.
