Bob worked through a quality Illawarra showing that challenged him in his thinking as he neared his danger cows for grand champion honours. One of the dark horses of the show, Llandovery Commanders Dainty, carried the well-performed prefix of Tony and Elle Hayes, who are well-known in the championship circle. However, Dainty calls the McMillan family her home and she took them to their first IDW grand champion title.

Joan came out of a competitive aged cow class and Bob explained her placing with deliberate wording.

"My cow on top is the most balanced and her udder is well blended through the fore-udder and she has more depth of rib. My cow in second is disadvantaged by being too fresh and although she does have some swelling in her udder she is a wonderful bodied cow."

Reserve champion Illawarra was the 2009 intermediate champion and she was again on her game, winning the four-year-iold in-milk class
